It was a shame we didn't have more time in SF; although we weren't gobsmacked by it at the time, the more I think about now it the more I think we missed a trick by not staying longer. Next time try the San Remo Hotel. It too is in North Beach. It's old, cheap and distinctive. Was built to house Italians just after the 1906 Earthquake, and has been kept up nicely. I'm afraid a "few touristy days" isn't going to reveal a hell of a lot more than tour sights. But there's lots more to be had and to be revealed.
